What is GST? (Goods & Service Tax)
GST, or Goods and Services Tax, is a unified indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services across India. It replaces a complex system of multiple indirect taxes and promotes transparency, simplicity, and efficiency in taxation. Whether you're a business owner, freelancer, or consumer, understanding GST is essential for accurate billing and tax compliance.
GST Calculation Formula & Logic
Our GST Calculator uses standard GST calculation methods to determine tax-exclusive and tax-inclusive amounts. It also breaks down GST into CGST and SGST for intra-State transactions or IGST for inter-State transactions.
1. GST Exclusive Amount — Adding GST
When the entered amount does not include GST, the calculator first determines the GST amount and then adds it to the taxable value.
GST Amount = (Taxable Amount × GST Rate) ÷ 100
Final Amount = Taxable Amount + GST Amount
Example:
If the taxable amount is ₹1,000 and the GST rate is 18%:
GST = (₹1,000 × 18) ÷ 100 = ₹180
Final Amount = ₹1,000 + ₹180 = ₹1,180
2. GST Inclusive Amount — Extracting GST
When the entered amount already includes GST, the calculator extracts the GST component from the total amount.
GST Amount = Inclusive Amount × GST Rate ÷ (100 + GST Rate)
Taxable Amount = Inclusive Amount − GST Amount
For example, if the total amount is ₹1,180 and the applicable GST rate is 18%:
GST = (₹1,180 × 18) ÷ 118 = ₹180
Taxable Amount = ₹1,180 − ₹180 = ₹1,000
This inclusive-tax method is consistent with the formula specified in the CBIC GST valuation rules.
3. CGST and SGST Calculation
For an intra-State transaction, GST is generally divided equally between Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST), where applicable.
For an 18% GST rate:
CGST Rate = 18% ÷ 2 = 9%
SGST Rate = 18% ÷ 2 = 9%
For a taxable amount of ₹1,000:
CGST = ₹90
SGST = ₹90
Total GST = ₹180
4. IGST Calculation
For an inter-State transaction, the applicable Integrated GST (IGST) is calculated using the full GST rate.
For a taxable amount of ₹1,000 at 18%:
IGST = (₹1,000 × 18) ÷ 100 = ₹180
Final Amount = ₹1,180
GST Rates and Custom Rates
GST rates depend on the classification and applicable tax provisions for the particular goods or services. India's GST rate structure was rationalised in 2025 around a 5% merit rate, an 18% standard rate, and a 40% special rate for specified goods and services, while specific classifications and exceptions continue to apply.
For this reason, Fintech Shield's calculator provides 5%, 18%, and 40% as selectable rates along with a Custom Rate option. Users should verify the applicable GST rate for their specific goods or services before using the calculation for an actual transaction.
Note: This calculator is intended for general estimation and educational purposes. Actual GST liability may depend on applicable rates, classification, place of supply, invoice requirements, exemptions, and other GST rules.
Frequently Asked Questions About GST Calculator
Find answers to the most common questions about using our GST Calculator Tool
Q1. What is a GST Calculator? Ans: A GST Calculator is an online tool that helps you calculate the Goods and Services Tax (GST) applicable to an amount. It can calculate both GST-exclusive and GST-inclusive amounts and provide a breakdown of the applicable tax. Q2. How do I use this GST Calculator? Ans: Enter the amount, select the applicable GST rate, choose whether the amount is GST-exclusive or GST-inclusive, and select the transaction type. For intra-State transactions, the calculator shows the CGST and SGST breakdown. For inter-State transactions, it calculates IGST. The result is displayed instantly. Q3. Can I use this GST Calculator for personal and business purposes? Ans: Yes. The calculator can be used by individuals, consumers, freelancers, businesses, professionals, and anyone who needs to estimate GST on a transaction or price. Q4. What GST rates are currently applicable in India? Ans: GST rates depend on the classification of the goods or services and the applicable GST notification. Following the 2025 GST rate rationalisation, the broad GST structure includes a 5% merit rate, an 18% standard rate, and a 40% special rate for specified goods and services. However, other specific rates, exemptions, and classifications can apply to particular goods or services. Q5. What is the difference between GST-inclusive and GST-exclusive amounts? Ans: GST Exclusive: GST has not yet been added to the taxable/base amount. The calculator adds the applicable GST to determine the final amount. GST Inclusive: The entered amount already includes GST. The calculator extracts the GST component and shows the underlying taxable amount. Q6. What is the difference between CGST, SGST, and IGST? Ans: For an applicable intra-State transaction, GST is generally divided between CGST (Central GST) and SGST/UTGST (State or Union Territory GST). For an applicable inter-State transaction, IGST (Integrated GST) is generally charged instead. This calculator provides the corresponding breakdown based on the transaction type selected. Q7. Does this GST Calculator use the latest GST rates? Ans: The calculator is designed around the current broad GST rate structure and provides selectable rates along with a custom-rate option. However, the applicable GST rate can vary according to the specific goods or services, classification, exemptions, and applicable notifications. Always verify the applicable rate before using the result for an actual tax invoice or compliance purpose. Q8. Can I calculate GST from an amount that already includes tax? Ans: Yes. Select “GST Inclusive — Extract GST from total”, enter the total amount, choose the applicable GST rate, and select the transaction type. The calculator will determine the taxable amount and GST component. Q9. Can I calculate CGST and SGST separately? Ans: Yes. Select “Intra-State — CGST + SGST” as the transaction type. The calculator divides the applicable GST into the corresponding CGST and SGST components where an equal split applies. Q10. Can I calculate IGST? Ans: Yes. Select “Inter-State — IGST” as the transaction type. The calculator applies the selected GST rate as IGST and displays the GST amount and final amount. Q11. Can I enter a custom GST rate? Ans: Yes. Select “Custom Rate” under the GST Rate option and enter the applicable percentage. This is useful when the applicable rate for a particular transaction or classification differs from the calculator's preset rates. Always verify the applicable rate before relying on the result for tax compliance. Q12. Do I need to install an app or software? Ans: No. Fintech Shield's GST Calculator is a browser-based tool that works on modern smartphones, tablets, laptops, and desktop computers. No installation is required. Q13. Does the calculator store my entered amount or calculation data? Ans: No. The calculator performs the calculations directly in your browser and does not require you to submit your amount to a server. Your entered calculation data is not stored by the tool. Q14. Is this GST Calculator suitable for official tax filing or invoicing? Ans: The calculator is intended for general estimation and educational purposes. Actual GST liability can depend on the applicable rate, product or service classification, place of supply, exemptions, invoice requirements, rounding rules, and other GST provisions. Verify the applicable rules or consult a qualified tax professional before using calculations for official tax compliance.
